The classic model and why it costs
Traditional paid parking uses a ticket machine at the entrance, a cashier or pay station at the exit and a barrier. Tickets get lost, machines jam, and a cashier is a staff cost on every shift. Reconciling takings is often manual too.
The ticketless flow
In an ANPR-based automated paid car park, the flow looks like this:
- Entry: the camera reads the plate, the system records the time and opens the barrier.
- Stay: the driver has nothing to keep, no ticket and no card.
- Payment: they scan a QR code in the car park and pay by card on their phone, with no app, or pay at the pay station or POS at the exit.
- Exit: the camera reads the plate, the system sees the payment and opens the barrier.
Tariffs
Tariffs are configured in the software: per hour or part-hour, free first minutes, daily caps, night or weekend rates. The calculation is automatic, so there are no till errors or arguments at the barrier.
Special customers (monthly subscribers, hotel guests, staff, residents) get separate rules: they pass without paying or pay a subscription rather than the hourly rate.
Payment methods
Most car parks combine several methods so no driver gets stuck:
- Online payment by QR, from the phone, without installing an app.
- A pay station (card and, optionally, cash) inside the car park.
- A POS at the exit for drivers who prefer to pay at the barrier.
Tax obligations and revenue records
Paid parking revenue carries tax obligations that depend on how you are organised and on the payment method, such as issuing fiscal receipts. Check the applicable rules with your accountant before launch.
An integrated system helps with reconciliation: every payment is tied to a pass, and reports show takings per day, site and payment method.
What if payments or the internet go down
Every automated car park needs a plan for the unexpected: an operator who can open the barrier manually, an alternative payment method and clear rules for each gate when the system cannot verify payment. These rules are set during installation, not during the incident.
