What a barrier and ANPR parking system costs: the factors that matter

You cannot price a parking system properly without knowing how many gates there are, what equipment already exists and which modules you need. Here is what goes into the cost and what to ask before a quote.

What the cost is made of

Any serious quote for a gated parking system breaks down into a few categories:

  • Automatic barriers or gates, including foundations and protection.
  • ANPR cameras for each direction of traffic and, optionally, detection loops.
  • Control modules, networking, power and, where needed, a local server.
  • Management software: licence or subscription, usually based on sites, gates and modules.
  • Installation, configuration, data import and training.
  • For paid car parks: pay stations, POS terminals and payment processor fees.
  • Maintenance and support after go-live.

The factors that move the price most

The number of gates and traffic lanes comes first: every lane needs a camera, a barrier and cabling. A large car park with a single entrance can cost less than a small one with three gates.

Second is what already exists. Many complexes have working barriers and sometimes cameras that can be reused. A site survey tells you what stays and what must be replaced.

Third is the operating model: a residents-only car park needs less equipment than a paid one, which requires pay stations, POS terminals and payment processor integration.

Hidden costs to check

A few things that often appear only after signing:

  • Civil works (foundations, cable trenches) not included in the quote.
  • Per-user or per-vehicle fees in the software.
  • Separate charges for out-of-hours support.
  • Lock-in to a single equipment vendor with no way to switch.
  • Fees for exporting your data if you want to change systems.

How to compare two quotes

Ask for the same structure in every quote: same gates, same modules, same support period. Then compare the total cost over several years, not just the upfront investment, and check what happens to your data and equipment if you leave the vendor.

What to prepare before asking for a quote

An accurate quote starts from the answers to a few questions:

  • How many sites, gates and traffic lanes do you have?
  • What equipment already exists (barriers, cameras, intercoms)?
  • How many spaces and authorised cars are there?
  • Do you have daily visitors? Do you need paid parking?
  • Do you want cloud software or installation on your own server?

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing barriers?
Often yes, if they can be triggered electrically through a control module. This is checked during the site survey.
Is the software a one-off or a monthly cost?
It depends on the vendor. Most modern systems use a subscription based on sites, gates and modules, and some also offer a licence for installation on the client's server.
Why is there no standard price?
Because the number of gates, existing equipment and required modules vary widely between car parks. A price without a survey is usually incomplete.
